JAN 2011 – MARKET UPDATE SEMINAR

CONNIE BOLLAND - Founder and Chief Economist, Economic Research Analysis Ltd.
Hong Kong Dollar peg and Hong Kong's housing market: What lies ahead?
Hong Kong's housing market has been a roller-coaster ride over the last two years. Having fallen sharply after the global financial
crisis in 2008, prices staged a strong and rapid rebound. Prices of luxury properties in particular have hit new highs. Many
commentators have cited the Hong Kong dollar peg as a major culprit in the huge jump in Hong Kong's home prices, and some
have proposed alternatives. Meanwhile, the government continues its year-long battle against property speculation. Its latest
round of measures, much more stringent than before, has led to a significant drop in local property stocks amid the ongoing
European debt crisis and heightened geopolitical risks in North Korea. Against this backdrop, what can we expect of Hong Kong's
housing market over the short and medium terms, and what will happen to the twenty-seven-year-old Hong Kong dollar peg?
What options does Hong Kong have, and which ones are the more likely? Come and explore these issues at our 20th January
seminar.
